Historical, Archaeological, and Architectural (Galle Fort Sri Lanka)
Galle Fort is a historical, archaeological, and architectural monument located in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka. It was initially built in 1588 by the Portuguese, and then extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onwards. Despite being over 423 years old, the fort still maintains its polished appearance due to the extensive reconstruction work done by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.

The fort has an interesting and colourful history, and it is now home to a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government, along with Dutch property owners within the fort, are hoping to make it one of the modern wonders of the world. UNESCO has recognized the heritage value of the fort and has inscribed the site as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv. This is due to its unique exposition of “an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
