Sigiriya

UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site.(Sigiriya Sri Lanka)

Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri, is an ancient rock fortress situated in the northern Matale District near Dambulla, in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It holds great historical and archaeological significance, with a towering column of rock rising almost 200 meters (660 ft) high. The Culavamsa, an ancient chronicle, states that King Kasyapa (477 – 495 CE) selected the location for his new capital and built a gateway in the shape of a giant lion on a small plateau about halfway up the rock. Currently, Sigiriya is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site and an exceptionally well-preserved example of ancient urban planning.

Site of Great Historical and Archaeological Significance.

Sigiriya, located in Sri Lanka, is home to the ruins of an upper palace situated on the rock’s flat top. It also features a mid-level terrace with the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its frescoes, and the lower palaces situated behind the lavish lower gardens. Additionally, the site served both as a palace and a fortress, with moats and ramparts protecting the citadel. The upper palace features cisterns carved into the rock, and the moats and walls surrounding the lower palace are exceptionally beautiful.
